My commentary on Leonard's Cohn's song Hallelujah

By Paul Ellingsen
Many people think that Leonard Cohn's song Hallelujah is a nice religious song. It is, but it's the wrong religion. It is actually a song of Satan (Lucifer) mocking God. If you read Ezek 28:11-20 It starts out talking about the king of Tyre but it quickly becomes evident that God is really talking about Lucifer (Satan's name before his fall) He was there in the garden of Eden. It says "The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created." His body was a musical instrument designed to praise God. Until iniquity was found in him and He was cast out of heaven. That's why Lucifer now says to God, "You don't care much for music do ya?" Satan's music nor longer glorifies God.

I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah

In the next verse Leonard takes 2 stories from the Bible (2 Samuel 11 about David and Bathsheba and Judges 16 about Samson) and one story from a Christian novel "The Steel Chair" written by CS Lewis and mixes them up into what sounds religious but is just gobble-de-gook

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

Baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

But love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah????? What's a broken hallelujah? More of Satan mocking God

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Ezek 28:14 says, "You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones." Lucifer was once very close to God and the Holy Spirit moved in him too, and he knew what was going on, but since he rebelled against God, God does no longer confides in him, and the Holy Spirit no longer moves in him

Well, maybe there's a god above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Now Satan questions if God exists and is bitter about love

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

What's it to ya? Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain is the 3rd commandment Exodus 20:7

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Now it almost sounds like Satan is repenting but we know that he will never repent. Read the book of Revelation. Satan gets locked up for 1000 years and as soon as he gets out he again deceives the nations Also Jesus said there is no truth in Satan

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. KJV

Ezek 28:11-20 NKJV
Lamentation for the King of Tyre 11 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 "Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord God:"You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created. 14 "You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. 15 You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you. 16 "By the abundance of your trading You became filled with violence within, And you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thing Out of the mountain of God; And I destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the fiery stones. 17 "Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, That they might gaze at you. 18 "You defiled your sanctuaries By the multitude of your iniquities, By the iniquity of your trading; Therefore I brought fire from your midst; It devoured you, And I turned you to ashes upon the earth In the sight of all who saw you. 19 All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you; You have become a horror, And shall be no more forever."'"
